Think I would have packed that bad boy on check in. However, I stupidly had a pocket knife in my purse and remembered it right before the security check on a trip from DC to Maine. Fortunately there was a Styrofoam cup with lid on it on a table nearby and I planted it in there.

Sounds like she was travelling to go on a motorcycle tour. If so, she probably didn't check any luggage--kinda hard to carry a big suitcase on a bike.
