Once in the murky Tigris, divers cannot see their hands in front of their faces. Jabbing a knife into the river bottom, they feel their way about, crawling through the muck, at times fighting strong currents. They flatten their bodies and make fanning motion with their arms, sort of like making snow angels, only on their bellies. Thank you very much for posting this article. This is one portion of the Army that very few people in the Army know about, and even fewer in the civilian community.
These guys go to the same schools that US Navy divers go through. The main difference is that they are expected to do their missions in ports and rivers, often working off of the back of a 5 ton truck.
As an active duty Army diver myself, I enjoy nothing more than getting these guys the recognition they deserve. I personally know everyone listed in that article and can honestly say that they are some of the best soldiers in the Army. Not that I'm biased :).
