Update on Local Shooting

1/6/04- Lansing police investigating the city's first murder of the new year. It happened Sunday night around 11 at an apartment complex near Pine Street and West Saginaw. Police say someone called saying they heard gunshots coming from the apartments. When police arrived, they found one man still alive with a gun shot wound. Close by, they found another man dead.

Police are still trying to piece together the city's first homicide of the year. They say the biggest challenge is identifying the victim. Police say they found the man dead inside the Ferris Manor apartment complex, but didn't find any identification on him. Police are waiting on autopsy results to confirm the cause of the death.

Lt. Bruce Ferguson, Lansing Police: "We're hoping that once we get him identified, we'll have a better idea of what happened and who he was with, right now, we just don't know."

The other victim, a Lansing man found still alive in the apartments, was shot. Police say initial reports indicate he was the victim of an attempted armed robbery. He was taken to a local hospital where he's recovering from his wound.

Lt. Bruce Ferguson: "We think that once we have a chance to talk to him, get some of our physical evidence together, we'll have a better idea of what happened."

Until then, police are hoping anyone who witnessed these crimes will come forward with information, information that could help solve the city's first homicide of the year.

Lt. Bruce Ferguson: "We're hoping that someone may have seen something that my give us more leads in this."

If you have any information about these crimes, police ask that you call 483-4591, or you can call Crimestoppers at 483-stop.

Is self defense murder? All reports that I have heard have been billing this as a self defense case. I can't understand why the press doesn't know the difference.

LSJ story

First I've heard of it. No charges have been filed so far so I'll take a wait and see approach.

I know the area fairly well and frequented the QD there when I went to the capitol. I'm not that suprised that there was some activity by there.

It's definitely not the best part of town. I wouldn't really want to be around there at night.
