If the guy is decent at heart, he will.

Sure, he can be decent, but can just suck up all the attention, affection, affirmation and still be emotionally lazy, because of "momma" issues. My only point is that Dr. Laura is being a bit disingenous to make such a blanket statement that men don't need a book. I love men, and believe me, they need a book, too.

We all need a book, a mentor, a friend who'll tell us the truth.

I agree---but I think men have heard a lot more about what they should do for their women (tell her you love her, tell her she's pretty, do your share of the housework, bring her flowers every now and again, ...) than women have heard about what they should do for their men.

I think he's updated it since 1988.

I hope to post something else in the midst of these issues before the day is out . . .

Great book for both men and women "The Five Love Languages" by Dr. Gary Chapman.

FOLLOWING ae some books I'd recommend in the middles of these issues or at least related significantly to these issues.

I like James Dobson because I've met him and find him to be authentic if a bit . . . perfectionistic in some contexts. I think he's mellowed over time and I believe his writings are among the best on the subjects of family and marriage as well as male/female relationships.

He's at least real and candid. But, he speaks from a lot of personal experience and tons of counseling experience.

Blessings,

Relatively few men read books.

Men need stories. Construct a story as a parable illustrating your message. Insure that the story is cast with factors, components which are central to his world and priorities. Insure the story is believable whether fiction or not.

IF THE STORY IS CONSTRUCTED WELL ENOUGH--he will have no defense against it.

Jesus talked almost exclusively in stories. Actually, men's brains seem to be constructed to take in, understand, comprehend, integrate, relate to, use stories much better than any other form of communication.

When men get together, they swap stories--war stories, job stories, sports stories (brave ones or brash ones or phoney ones--even sex stories).

Women share feelings. Men share stories.

Talk to men in stories. Works much better.

ALSO--AVOID CLOSING THE CIRCLE FULLY. Leave part of the circle open so it will niggle at the man and he will have to at least unconsciously ponder it more and longer. If you tidy everything up, it's easier for him to dismiss. Leave part of it for him to discover and conclude with his own AHHH HAH INSIGHT from his pondering of your story.
