Some 11,700 soldiers from the United States and other countries remain in Afghanistan to fight suspected Taliban and al-Qaida guerillas. But reports of raids on drug facilities or smugglers are rare

I wonder who smokes all that opium. I smoked pot for years. Took LSD. Mushrooms. I smoked opium once that I bought at a Dead show. Who the hell smokes this stuff? I have met lots of pot smokers in my time. Coke heads. Even heroin junkies. But I just don't come across opium or opium smokers very often. This drug must sell in other parts of the world. I don't think opium sells in the US or else I'd have come across it more often.

The opium is? Do you have to make opium in order to make heroin? Of course heroin has insanely and tragically been in demand for years. I could understand these quantities if that's the case.

Yes, opium is further processed.
There is a market for straight opium, but also for its derivatives.

Well, if you can get someone to try opium, I think I can understand how it can become a real moneymaker. My one time daliance lingered in my mind for a long time. Months later, at unpredictable times, I could almost taste it. Scary stuff. The way I remember it was like it had no unwanted side effects. It was so smooth and light.

Uruzgan governor Jan Mohammed Khan told AP that the house belonged to Haji Ghulam Nabi, a tribal leader who Khan said had close ties to the former Taliban regime. Three of his relatives were detained.. Deh Rawood, where the U.S. military has a small base, is considered a Taliban stronghold, and shootings and rocket attacks near the base occur regularly. ....
An Afghan soldier was killed in the area on Dec. 2 in a gunbattle between U.S.-led forces and guerrillas.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
They had to go back to Dec. 2 to find an allied casualty in this "Taliban stronghold?" Good news.
