I wouldn't rule out a Congressional bogging down. Both parties are divided on immigration issues, and there is no clear concensus in the Republican or 'Rat caucuses. That gives the possibility, if not probability, of multiple proposals floating around with none of them able to muster majority support. If that happens, Bush can tell the voters he's pandering to, "Well, I tried", and win them over that way.

I would.

These are the same so-and-so's, who, after having explained to them exactly what they'd be doing if they passed it -- and acknowledging that they understood -- went ahead anyway, and signed a pro-spam bill into law. They even had the chutzpah to insist that it's an anti-spam law. In reality, it legitimizes spam, and gives it legal protection.

Why did they do that?

Follow the money.

Same thing here, but with the volume cranked up an order of magnitude higher.

If that happens, Bush can tell the voters he's pandering to, "Well, I tried", and win them over that way.

Fade to Charlie Brown dreaming about the Red-Haired girl, musing to himself something about, "...and wouldn't that be nice."

Reality dose: we're getting an illegal alien amnesty -- an ongoing amnesty this time, with a three year "re-up" privilege. We're also getting a renewal of the AWB.

What we're not getting, I suspect, is a two-term presidency for Bush. He's kissed off his base, and NWIH is he gonna get the "hispanic vote". The dems are already categorizing today's abomination as "a good first step", and demanding much more -- and, you can bet your bottom dollar they'll be promising much more, to the selected constituencies.
