Israel should very seriously consider remarks made recently by Syrian President Bashar Assad onresumption of peace talks between the two countries, military Intelligence Chief Aharon Ze'evi Farkash told the cabinet on Sunday.

"Syrian President Bashar Assad's remarks regarding negotiations with Israel are very serious," Farkash was quoted as saying byIsrael Radio.

According to the general, Assad's gesture was in response to Washington's pressure on Damascus, the present US control over Iraqand an interest in taking advantage of the standstill innegotiations between Israel and the Palestinians.

Meanwhile, Farkash accused Syria of continuing to fund Palestinian terror organizations and the Lebanese Hezbollah guerilla group.

"Syria continues aiding Hezbollah and Palestinian terror groups, mainly the Tanzim PLO-related group, in financial and other ways,"Farkash said.

Consider the source ("People's Daily" is a step down from Debka)

Sure, Syria will consider "peace" -- after Israel's unconditional surrender.

Guess I'm out of line, but I say let's have peace after Assad is dead or incarcerated.

He's no different nor better than Saddam: Assad is a dangerous snake IMO.

No doubt, they [Syria] need to buy time.

Why, to hide stuff? The Syrians can run, but they will only die tired.

The face of the Middle East is changing quickly, right before our very eyes.

That means he wasn't smiling when he said it.
