I think there's a related disorder called animal hoarding. Lots of cats and dogs.

Did you see the Animal Cops show where they removed about 250 cats from this lady's house. It was gross! They handled the situation pretty well but she was obviously mentally ill. I just can't imagine the smell.

Yes, It must be a mental thing. In my neighbor's case, they have very little money and she is helping break the family financially by her continual buying, as well as destroying any semblance or normal life. Her husband is an enabler, I'm afraid. He won't do anything about it.
