THE OLD, TIRED IDEA that America has only a finite number of jobs -- and that we must guard them zealously against raids from cheap foreign labor -- has been making a remarkable comeback. The only difference is that its upside-down view of the economy has plumbed new depths.

True, the high-speed coaxial cables that girdle the globe courtesy of the AMERICAN TAXPAYER via Global Crossings tax breaks and R&D funding through the Clinton adminstration. And once that infrastructure was in place? The executives bail out in order that the company can be bankrupted then bought for pennies on the dollar by the Chicoms.

Oh yeah Texas_dawg, thanks for reminding us all of that wealth redistribution scheme to the Chinese. It sure gives us a good feeling about all that good advice you keep giving us.

Americans lost millions of jobs during the vaunted 1990s too.

But they gained over 20,000,000 than they lost.

Jobs are always being lost as production changes and businesses evolve.

There was a tremendous leaning of corporations during the early to mid 1990s.
That led to higher productivity and profits which created more jobs.

We are experiencing the same thing now.
The jobs will return with a vengeance.

Considering the stock market meltdown, recession, corporate book-cooking scandals and the terrorist attack of Sept. 11, I'd say that the American economy is in a miracle mode recovery!

The road to prosperity, however, runs through a technical education.
Not everyone has the ambition to prepare for the future.

The battle between the welfare state and capitalism culminates every four years in November.

Well damn stated. If the idiots who think we have a pure capitalist economy would take a look, the damned government is impeding even greater growth. Why we are giving tax incentives (Import-Export Bank for one) to move industry to China, India, etc. and not giving tax incentives to keep the jobs here is beyond the pale. This is not a demorat or pubbie problem. It is a neosocialist globalist problem run by a bunch of faceless bureaucrats in D.C.

Our representatives need to start paying the price in the voting booth if they do not stop these moronic policies. Get the government off our backs and we'll grow at 8% annually for decades. There are enough of us on FR and in this nation to create the job growth and security needed. It just takes us too many damned years to pay the fees, file the paperwork and pay those G*d damned leeching attorneys to get a large business moving fast. Streamline it and get out of the way.
We'll make America even greater.

I was hiring but the .gov piled more regs on my back so the corresponding legal fees increased and I said screw it. I sold it for a profit and retired earlier this year. Yeah, I'm real anti-capitalist. I support free markets with limited government interference. Don't you have a W suck up party to attend or something? Yep sure then they took one of the 20,000,000 good jobs created. If NAFTA was not to blame then it is Bush because the job loss happened on his watch particularly since he made China one of his favored trading nations. Notice this is sourced to Bush's administration trade department.

Thank you. When I get bored again, I'll start another business. I do know what direction I'm heading. And I don't want someone to tell me what direction I have to takte. As long as I'm making money, operating legally, and paying my taxes, what the hell is it the business of the .gov to tell me how I must operate my business right down to the stupidest of details. We're on the edge of the cliff. We either become an EU clone, or revert back to that America which dominated the industrialized world from 1900-1971.
