Here is a theory I have been mulling around..
What if a succession of people are assigned to bring a different part of the bomb on the plane....say 7 people over 7 days.....with the woman bringing on the key part the plastic explosives and assembling the bomb in the bathroom and setting it off..

say 7 people over 7 days....It would explain why some people are saying the threat is the plane and not the passengers.
Perhaps we found a piece from day one and are now trying to find the day 2-7 people.

In September of 2002, plastic explosives (but no detonator or other bomb materials) were found stuffed between armrests on a France to Morocco flight during routine cleaning.
The "bomb parts" theory explains some of these extensive searches happening now, but I get the feeling there's more than one scenario worrying the feds.

It would be even more impressive if everyone on the plane were part of the clever plot-- passengers and crew. If they blew up a plane over the Mediterranean or Atlantic, that would teach us infidels to respect them.
