Three Air Force planes buzz the parade route of the 115th Tournament of Roses Parade in Pasadena,
California on January 1, 2004. The United States began 2004 under extremely tight security in an effort to
thwart any terror attack on celebrations from New York to Las Vegas. The last big event of the U.S. New
Year celebrations -- the Rose Parade and football game in Pasadena -- was protected by video surveillance
cameras and two electronic sensors to detect biological agents in the Rose Bowl stadium. (Jim Ruymen/Reuters)
