Gustav Fridolin had stayed after deciding to use his right to appeal his expulsion with the Supreme Court.

He should have been allowed to stay---in a prison cell.

He was.

But the [Apart from the reality of its obscenely-anti-semitic component, entirely-symbolic] "courage" of his conviction ran out.
