I think others explained it pretty well, but a volcano related example is that Mt. St. Helens killed everything within 10 miles (that's exagerated because the 10 mile range was directional instead of circling the crater). A blast which kills everything in 600 miles would have to be 3600 times as powerful as Mt. St. Helens (60 x 60). That's an Art Bell style disaster.

ah yes, but the article states that this explosion
would be 2500X mt. saint helens.
