Eleven more quake survivors found - report

January 01 2004 at 09:20AM

Bam, Iran - Eleven more survivors were pulled from the devastation caused by the earthquake in southeastern Iran on Wednesday, state radio said on Thursday, in a report apparently aimed at providing at least a glimmer of good news amid the devastation and death.

Rescue workers in the affected region, centred on the city of Bam, had however expressed pessimism at the chances of finding any more people alive five days after the quake killed an estimated 40 000 people.

Some estimates have put the number of dead as high as 50 000.

State radio gave no details of the 11 people it said had been saved on Wednesday. On the previous day it had said that five people had been found alive in the rubble.

In all, 2 000 people were found alive amid the devastation, most of them in the first days after the quake, which occurred on Friday.

Around 30 000 bodies have so far been removed from the devastation and buried in makeshift graves.

The state radio also reported that Bam had on Wednesday seen its first wedding since the earthquake. It reported that the ceremony had initially been scheduled for Friday, the day the quake hit.

The groom's father had insisted that the wedding go ahead, saying that was what the friends and relatives who died in the disaster would have wanted, the radio said.

Thans to the U.S. who actually look for survivors after devastating dissasters. More love, care and compassion coming from the Christian nation to Muslims.

Wow. Great news. I keep hearing reports that they believe there are hundreds of people still alive under the rubble.
These successful rescues always intensify the search efforts. Let's hope they find many more.

I'm curious: why haven't we heard about any human shields, Follywood celebrities, etc., going over and helping any of these people? I mean, is being buried in an earthquake any worse than being caught in a war? Where is the full-page ad from Sean Penn? Where are the human shields, ever worried about civilian casualties, helping the victims?

Ah, the UN. They never cease to do the wrong thing.
Hopefully, some of the rescuers will defy the "intelligence" of the UN.

Got this from another article:

"26,500 bodies had been recovered and buried in Bam and surrounding cities."

The numbers are staggering.

What? Can't be! Didn't I read somewhere that the UN said their aid workers were giving up looking for survivors because there wouldn't be any more? And that their efforts would now concentrate on the "infrastructure?"

Surely the UN knows best.

Kofi is calling an emergency meeting right now to demand that the eleven folks be returned to the rubble.
