Protection does not work in the long-run. It weakens industry rather than helps it and causes a more catastrophic loss of jobs than that caused by the natural market changes due to competition.
It seems your position is one that wishes to avoid competition rather than one that seeks to find new ways to compete.
And competition does not mean that our workers have to accept lower wages. I think it means our workers will find better employment at higher wages!
My example of putting a nut on a bolt is that our workers should not have to do this type of labor, they can do better things for more pay.
