Held any "book-burnings" lately?

A library should be a safe place for children. Adults can get keys to turn off the filters. Burning legitimate pieces of literature and not providing children to pornography are two different things. There is no reason why taxpayers should be paying for something that allows pornography to children. I suppose you are for allowing kids to buy alcohol, pornography, and shoot why not drugs too while you are at it?

Agreed. So move the computers into the adult section and prohibit minors from accessing them. Problem solved with no expensive software or licensing fees.

Who's going to determine what "legitimate pieces of literature" are, a Library Filter Committee?

I'm in Prince William and Fairfax County libraries all the time. Internet stations are everywhere. I glance at what is going on, especially what young people have on their screens. Never seen a problem.

Why not have it be opt-in. If your kid can't be trusted, put a big red dot on their library card so the librarians know to turn on filters for those kids. I don't use porn filters at home, and I trust my kids not to surf porn at the library. Scanning the logs and reprimanding kids that violate library policy should be enough.

Filters have a LOT of problems. MANY filters are very anti-gun and would filter out GOA, NRA, and FR.

I agree! It's disgusting. But lest we forget, kids can already get all the free condoms they want at school and have easy access to illicit drugs. They've thrown out the baby to save the bathwater.

Locally, many parents drop off their kids at the library for homework projects. The boys/girls club is right around the corner and movie theatre across the street - kids hang out unsupervised all the time. Now it's all the free porn they can 'accidentally' stumble upon. And all the pervs who go to the library, of all places!, to access it. Ugh.

All good arguments. The ACLU came to our meeting on this topic and shot down every one of them. The community is hotly split 50-50, and this is a conservative community.
