That is not what would happen, when an illegal has interaction with police, etc. they would be detained, then the INS would take it from there to deport them.

We would not have enough National Guard to go around the country to round them up. Guarding the borders while the above is done will help take care of it also.

They could do an amnesty that could allow illegals that have been here more than say 10 years without incident to become legal and all others would be required to leave or what ever.

..and you would be against that because? By the way what Ridge said is absolutely right despite the pitchfork attitude of a lot of people here. We have millions of illegals and we have to recognize them. I've yet to see how we're supposed to stop them from coming in. They don't all come over fences in California. Some fly in on visas and stay. Some come on boats. Did you know we have over 88,000 miles of coastline? Stopping them from coming in is a pipe dream. Dealing with them when they are here and getting them to come out is what is needed.

I like it English speaking, too. It's good to learn a second language for many reasons, but to get a job in the USA? This goes against the "assimilation" theory.

Applying the idea that every illegal is a member of Azlan or Mecha and is in a gang waiting to rape your wife is what is bothering me.

I wonder who has said that?

does thie mean they have citizenship or are just recorded as present and given green cards?

My understanding of a Guest Worker Program is that they would be considered guest workers. That is, temporary residents, not citizens.

Being Jewish in Germany made one an "illegal," too.

I have no love for illegals, but the extent to which some FReepers dehumanize them is unsettling. People who scream "round them all up" don't live in the real world, IMHO.

Tell Bush you won't vote for him!

It's not just Bush. It's all these other politicians as well. Maybe, at least they will know we are aware of their treachery.

Fixing the borders solves the first problem but does not address the second one.

GOD this is so frustrating. WHAT DOES THAT MEAN? Fix the borders? We have over 88,000 miles of shoreline if you include islands. We have some of the largest borders in the world. We have the largest shipping fleet in the world. We have more continental flights than any country in the world. Everyone says close the borders -- fix the border problem. How? Has anyone thought beyond that statement?

"Perhaps even many Freepers have bought the conventional, PC-tainted wisdom that illegal aliens, particulary those from Mexico (by far constituting the vast majority of illegals), are all noble workers seeking jobs Americans refuse to perform."

Seems so.
Now the new line is "An Illegal Alien ignoring immigration laws is no different than an American citizen driving 56 in a 55 zone."

And your FR homepage says:
Borders, Language, Culture.
These are the things America seems to have given up on.
Well, I will not give up.

True. And I think we should put the military on the border ASAP. That doesn't mean that some of the current workers could be allowed to stay, assuming they would be fingerprinted, given guest worker status, and tracked. And hell no to amnesty. I'm still waiting for any evidence that Bush is about to grant amnesty to the illegals. The media keeps saying it, just like in 2001, and it didn't happen then either.

I didn't do it. You didn't do it. We have been fighting this for years. We have been victimized.

Let's start by deporting the criminals. Then we start by fining the employers who are hiring illegals. Next, deport the illegal or at least undocumented gang members by rescinding Special Order 40. Most of the millions of illegals already here have green cards. Probably illegally through false documents and S.S.#'s, but that should appease some of you bleeding-hearts. Clinton and Bush both allowed illegals a certain amount of time to register with the INS, but they didn't. So, forget that idea.

There are many ways to undo some of the damage and to send a clear message to those waiting to cross.

Next,

He's 'thinking' LEGAL STATUS (or some other hyperbole) is *not* the word amnesty. But it IS the same action, and the results will be the same.......MILLIONS more will come for their 'reward'.

If "legal status" means a temporary work permit with fingerprinting, that still doesn't equal blanket amnesty.

"Anyone who wants amnesty for illegal aliens is corrupt, mentally ill, or a traitor."

Or just plain, old-fashioned ignorant.

Without adding the abortion arguement you have hit the nail on the head. The problem is a perceived shortage of laborers to keep the economy steaming along. If the economy tanks most boomers will lose their retirement.

This is about big business and is ability to be competitve in a future economy. So do we hand our country over to a new generation of immigrants from Mexico or do we deflate the economy to a point sustainable with our current citizenship?

This is the mindset of the GOP and these are pre-emptive steps to correct the upcoming "labor crisis". They need to spell out in plain words what problem they are solving and why we need to solve it. To do otherwise is an insult to their constituency and only creates confusion. Besides, it's "we the people" who must make the tough decisions and our leaders should recognize this and actually ask us what we want.

Here's a better idea: Vote out the liberal Democrats who are offering the enticements to jump ahead of the line. Any call to mine and machinegun women and children at the border is despicable.
