Same thing with terrorism. While terrorism is something that happens somewhere else, people are just blissfully unaware of it. Once it affects them they want to know why nobody ever did anything to stop it.
You look at the current Democratic debate and the current themes the media is harping on. The nine dwarves are trying to delineate themselves on how they would have acted in regards to the Iraq war. They would have supported it or they wouldn't have supported it or they would have done it differently yadda yadda yadda.
But the key point is- it's in the past. It's done now. We now have other issues facing us but they are still politicking on yesterday's issues. What they should be talking about is how they will handle Pakistan. That would be something I would truly be interested in hearing, not how they would've handled an event that has already been handled.
Same with the news media. Today's version of investigative reporting seems to be ever more about unravelling the past than investigating and shining a light on the unknowns of the present and future. Journalists are off on some witch hunt trying to show that this or that politician knew something two years ago when they could be actually serving a good public service by making people aware of the danger that faces us tomorrow.
