I am really glad you posted this. If there IS a serious breakdown in all our accustomed luxuries...HAM is all that will be working. Even owning a receiver would keep a person informed. A source of electricity would also help !

As an amateur radio operator, my TNC is always ready to go for emergency packet communications. Not to mention that the shack can run on battery power for an indefinite period of time. Who needs the internet? LOL!

What I don't get is why some are here with the serious people. I mean ,,don't they have chores like polishing their tinfoil, cleaning their weapons, shoveling out their lean-to's, intimidating their neighbors, cultivating their weed, cashing their unemployment checks, hanging around at the Dollar Store. I think everyone involved are inept. Starting with Ridge, and then the media itself. The terrorists gather clues from both these two and shift their attack plans accordingly. The media does a good job of letting the terrorists know what targets are soft and what targets are heavily fortified.

I can just imagine some terrorist summit in some cave somewhere and one of the underlings says "Let's try ____" and OBL or the second in charge says "No, CNN said the US Government infidels are making sure that won't happen, but we'll table that idea for the time being, thank you Abu".

I'm sure that Todd Beamer and a few other passengers would have liked to have one.

It wasn't all that uncommon for us peasants to be "allowed" to carry guns no planes until the 1960s or so. And pilots could carry them until the 1980s. No hijackings then.
