I wouldn't be surprised if there was more to the "argument" part of this than they may want to disclose to his mother too.
Was he "thrown out" of the car? (figuratively, not literally?) If it was done on the open highway and not at some stopping area, my guess is that somebody slammed on the breaks and ordered him out of the car.
Were all of his bags driven on home or were any missing when they arrived?
Sorry if these sound too intrusive. I'm just trying to piece together what happened.

After some of the souls that have bared all around here including me nothing seems to intrusive amongst Freepers.
Esp. in times of crisis.
