If the cow was known to be sick while still alive, why was the meat cut & sold? The meat should have at least been held until test were done on the brain.

Agreed. That's one of the systemic problems that has me most concerned. Another is the minimal amount of testing. I heard today that we test one of every 1200 as compared to most of Europe that tests one out of four.
Does anyone else here think it is asinine that the industry and government did not have better methods in place?

I've seen pictures of cows with this disease, and they can't stand or walk. They describe how they shove them into packing plants with bulldozers or pull them, using truck hoists.
The fact that the farmer is so desperate for every cow/bull/whatever to go to market, that they drag in diseased animals just makes me sick.
I hope that Congress passes a law, because I guess it's going to take Federal intervention, that no "downed animal" is allowed to be put into the food chain - for humans or animals.
I can't believe that this isn't just common sense for the farmer or the meat packer. The concept that diseased and sick/dying animals are processed and turned into food just disgusts the heck out of me.

The F&DA is now thinking of doing this. (duh) I doubt there is much chance of getting sick from this beef - good grief, more people die of flu. HOWEVER, I cannot understand how ANYONE could render a SICK animal for consumption... especially in human food. Nor do I see common sense in feeding meat products to herbivores.
