Two questions: Why do many people not spell "God" out, but treat it like an obscenity, like "G*d"?

I believe that devout Jewish people believe it would be disrespectful to spell out God's name, so they asterisk out the o.
As for famous people, I don't think it is our place to out them, but there are quite a number of media types who Freep, and several well known conservative activists.
