I sort of sympathized with the guy until the end when I read this part --- he sounds like kind of a wimp --- he gets beat up and he's got a broken heart over it?

Give the guy a break Fitz, it's Christmas. Lots of folks are a little more emotional at this time of year and he may be blathering a little out of gratitude for not being killed.
