Could it be that the ACLU wants to infultrate Rush limbaugh's team? Rush is unlikely to go anywhere soon. Affiliation would buy them legitimacy.
Maybe.. But outside conservative circles, the ACLU already has legitimacy. It could be about publicity, but consider the media - with their liberal tendencies, they already will cover the smallest ACLU lawsuit at the drop of a hat, but ignore Limbaugh except to mock him and cover bad things about him.
Sure, it might buy them some notoriety, supporting someone who most people would assume is their mortal enemy, but in many circles associating with Rush will make them LOSE legitimacy!
The ACLU always has been an advocate of medical privacy, and Rush is a high-profile victim of government intrusion into our personal records. I say Rush should take them up on it. Who knows - maybe some of Rush's conservativism will rub off on them!

There is a philosophical tension between two major factions within the ACLU. One faction wants to further any liberal cause; the other is more philosophically pure about civil rights even when it might hurt a liberal cause. So far the first faction seems to be winning out.

They might hope that Rush will quit jabbing at them on air. That would be kind of difficult for him to do if he accepts their involvement. It may even be difficult for him to do if he doesn't.
