Also, the buildings in Iran aren't built to withstand earthquakes. And many of these buildings were "huts".

The Paso Robles quake was R 6.5 while the Iranian quake was R 6.7. Although they look similar, the Richter scale is exponential 6.7 is almost twice as powerful as 6.5. Other factors may be proximity to the epicenter, surface geology and most importantly, the type of building construction.
