I don't think that a a passenger airplane crashed into Hoover Dam would even leave a dent.

Identity theft. Name on the list, but was home and intended to stay there. Good point! Identity theft was allegedly a problem with some of the other 9-11 terrorists.

ANd you wouldn't get their "briefcase" or suitcase of cash.
Patience is a virtue. Let them suffer before they die. They're not afraid to die, but suffering that's something else.

Remember, we & the Brits could not take out the Ruhr river dams in WWII. They eventually got them by making bombs that would it the dam (on the lake side) and roll down to the bottom.
They got a couple but it was not easy. NO chance with just a plane.

if the guys didn't show up and had tickets, one can assume they likely are being hunted down.

I can appreciate it's massive amount of concrete.
But it seems to me that some good cracks and all that water pressure would not be good things.
Besides, I've had images, repeated images come to me for several decades of the dam being done in by a quake or bomb.
I'd love to be wrong.

I know that NYC would have a a hugh population during New Years eve, but what if they decided to hit Yellowstone park. I have read that if that volcano erupted, it could rip the US in a large size away from the mainland. I know that sounds absurd, but I would think it is something terrorist might consider. I read somewhere on FR, about the possiblity of the volcano erupting and that would happen on it own eruption, but could it be induced by outside sources? Don't yell at me, but it is something that came to mind. (I love "what ifs" and am always speculating).

I have that feeling too. Sure, if they could pull it off they would love to crash some more planes. But I am leaning toward a seaborne threat for the grand finale. The seaborne issue is a definate possibility and the intercept of drugs in the past weeks associated with AQ proves that they have a "fleet" of some sort.

A spokesman for the French prime minister, Jean-Pierre Raffarin, said the decision to cancel the flights came early on Christmas Eve after American authorities notified France that "two or three" suspicious people, possibly Tunisian nationals, were on the manifests of three Los Angeles-bound flights.
snip
US sources hit back at French scepticism, saying American intelligence agencies had intercepted e-mails from the al-Qa'eda terrorist group suggesting another September 11-style attack was being plotted for the Christmas holiday.
The al-Qa'eda messages referred specifically to Air France and even gave a flight number, officials said. Other warnings have been issued about flights by the Mexican carrier, Aeromexico, it was reported.

A devastating strike on the dam would be improbable, IMO. But a crash landing in down town Vegas would be catastrophic and very do-able. Looks like we fended this one off, no thanks to the f*ing Nazi-loving French.

M Raffarin's spokesman added that the United States had threatened to refuse the planes permission to land if they took off.

I do not mean to repudiate your claim. I think it isbe wise to assume a target such as the Hoover Dam is on the list. I guess it comes down to what they feel will hurt us the most, and has the greatest chance of success.

What about the power dam in the area? That would be a more likely target! Hoover Dam would laugh at an impacting aircraft. At the top the concrete is 45 ft thick, at the bottom 660 ft thick.
This is an entirely different type of structure than a skyscraper. It is meant to hold back the hydrostatic force of the water behind it, and it is much stronger than any building.
