Truly, it is an amazingly under-reported fact of WWII.
That our military vetoed the idea of nuking Kyoto because of cultural considerations
and then had "Bock's Car" line up on a Catholic cathedral to drop
the second weapon of mass destruction of the atomic age.
By nuking Japan's most Christianized city, the US government accomplished what
the central Japanese government couldn't do over centuries: virtually wiping out
the Christians in Japan.
In terms of learning how to wage mega-war, it's too bad Kyoto wasn't nuked.
Just to see if destroying the cultural center of a country can end a war...
that would be valuable information if we are pushed to vaporizing Mecca and Medina.
I'm not hoping for that eventuality...just speculating about history...
