a trip to Hawaii
Do a Google on Halekulani...then when you "do" Waikiki take a walk thru (and say Hi to Joey the Poolmeister for us!)
Halekulani is the finest hotel in all of Hawaii....secretly tucked away right on Waikiki, kinda away from the hustle/bustle.

that's great, my son always cleans out his toys before Christmas and we go to a laundromat and wait till we see somebody that looks like they could use the extra presents and give them to them. He always feels SO good afterward. One year we did that and threw in some good used coats, the lady put one on her smallest child right then. The little girl was just glowing.

At our house, Santa is STILL waiting for deep sleep -- lil buddy (4) has a bad cough and is having trouble snoozing. Dad is snoring next to him on the bed.
Since we have an aspiring astronaut, Santa will bring a play tent shaped like a rocket, and a rolling suitcase with the NASA logo and "Future Astronaut" on it - also a doctor kit, veggietales stuff like the Jonah pirate ship, "that racetrack, mom, with that really cool snake that tries to get the cars and 3 LOOPS that go whoo whoo whoooooo", candy and smaller stuff in the stocking, DVDs and such.

"You mean.... you mean Santa's not real... sniff, sniff."I know what you mean.
Many years ago, when I was very small and we lived in tiny Douglas, Alaska during World War II, I was busying myself with throwing a tantrum on the kitchen floor. Nobody was paying any attention to me--except Santa, who chose that moment to look in the window. Seeing me drumming the floor with my heels, he shook his head and wagged a finger at me.
I never forgot it, and I cherished that episode in my heart for years. (Not the tantrum, of course...)
In 1964, when we returned to Alaska, we went to Douglas to look at the old house we'd lived in through the '40's. I was 21 years old, married, and had two children. As we rounded the corner, my mother pointed out a house and said, "That's where the man who was the Santa who shook his finger at you lived..."
It broke my heart. I can't even tell you how sad it was to lose that precious belief, that last little piece of my childhood.
All those years of believing...

Yes, I made a mistake and bought the Decepticon guy. Kid was thrilled and I was puzzled.

Thanks for the reminder of the reason for the season...it's not about the stuff you give, or the stuff you get.

These stories remind me of Christmas morning circa 1971, when my little brother and I woke up to a Christmas tree loaded with a variety of toys. Then, as we sat there starting to unwrap our boxes we noticed a strange cage hanging beside the window. It took a while for it to register with us that the cage contained a squirrel monkey.
My mom claims it's the only gift she ever came to regret, but I must say he really livened up the neighborhood the following summer (he became famous for his high-wire acrobatics at the funeral home across the street - DURING THE FUNERALS!)

PS. "Did you ever see the faces of children
They get so excited.
Waking up on Christmas morning
Hours before the winter suns ignited.
They believe in dreams and all they mean
Including heavens generosity.
Peeping round the door
to see what parcels are for free
In curiosity."
