[history]
21 December 2003-- A somber Tom Ridge, Secretary of the Department of Homeland Security announced the increase of the color coded alert to "Orange" today, stating: "The strategic [intelligence] indicators, including al Qaeda's continued desire to carry out attacks against our homeland, are perhaps greater now than at any point since September 11th. Information indicates that extremists abroad are anticipating near-term attacks that they believe will rival, or exceed, the attacks in New York, at the Pentagon, and in Pennsylvania."

COMMENT: DoD sources have indicated FOUR 5-man teams in possession of cargo aircraft headed for previously noted targets: the White House, the Pentagon and speculation of the NY Stock Exchange. Additionally, US counter-terrorism units are specifically concerned with radio-controlled model aircraft being used as a platform to disperse biologicals over target cities. Several U.S. military gunships were spotted chasing RC aircraft on Dec. 20. In the last 48 hours, actual photographs of suitcase nukes have shown up on "disappearing" Jihad websites. Developing. . .

"In conjunction or in addition to the above, evidence indicates the possession of a nuclear device, devices, material or materials already inside the continental US."
Not to sound too asinine, but what has DHS been doing for the last 2 and half years?

These guys (NIN and Quayle) see terrorists under every bed and around every corner. Not to make light of the threats to our safety but, give us a break and quit with the tin foil fear mongering.

Hey, they've been spending our money draining ponds in Maryland and examining homemade turtle traps. What's wrong with that?
To: SandyInSeattle
They don't know other than "possible". I wonder how much funding DHS gets.

Given the fact that this Northeast Intellegence Network is run out of some guy's Mom's basement, I think it's doing great.

I'm beginning to wonder if Kadafi's sudden change of heart may have had more to do with pending operations than with Saddam's capture?

DHS has been very busy, the fact that we have not experienced another attack (other than a few independent attacks like the shooter at LAX) is attributable to the success of the DHS. Just because you haven't gotten any personal messages or instructions from them, doesn't mean that they are not taking action.

LOL. And the theories sound so nice after just having been pulled out of their butt.

(The constitution doesn't protect only the things you approve of.)
Could be:
Ghadaffi has built his nuke (or just a dirty bomb), given it to Al Qaida and is now making noises about being the first to give up nuclear weapons. He has built one and deployed it. When it goes off, nobody will know where it came from. But you can be sure, N. Korea (and their godfather China), Iran and Libya will have had a hand in it.
Ghadaffi only gave up his program after being caught receiving a shipment of components and materials for such WMDs.
Hopefully, it's just another false alarm.

If Al Qaeda was about to mount an operation of this scope, we sure wouldn't hear about it from them. They are very silent--how many chat rooms were warning about hijacked planes prior to 9/11? None. I don't doubt that they are trying to attack us, perhaps even very soon, but this level of detail is not Al Q's m.o.
