Egyptian FM returns home from Israel CAIRO, Dec. 22 (Xinhua) -- Egyptian Foreign Minister Ahmed Maher returned home Monday evening after a short visit to Israel where hewas assaulted by Muslim worshippers at the Al Aqsa mosque in the Old City of Jerusalem.
During the one-day trip, Maher met separately with Israeli Prime Minister Ariel Sharon and Foreign Minister Silvan Shalom on ways to break the deadlock of the Palestinian-Israeli peace track, the state-run television reported.
The top Egyptian diplomat was assaulted by Muslim worshipper at the mosque, Islam's third holiest site, when he visited the site. The Palestinian extremists threw shoes at him, a traditional Muslim insult.
Some witnesses said that Maher was slightly injured and was taken to hospital by Israeli police, while others claimed Maher was not injured in the attack.
Maher arrived in Jerusalem early on Monday for a one-day visit to help restart talks on the stalled US-backed roadmap peace plan. It was the first visit paid by a top Egyptian diplomat to Israel in about three years.
The visit was seen as a significant thaw in ties between Israel and Egypt.
Egypt, the first Arab country to sign a peace treaty with Israel in 1979, has been playing a key mediating role in resolving the Arab-Israeli conflicts.
But Cairo withdrew its ambassador to Israel soon after the eruption of the Palestinian intifada in September 2000 in protest at Israel's excess use of force against the Palestinians.

They shouted at Maher, "You're not welcome here!" and charged that Egypt was helping Israel oppress the Palestinians. "You are collaborating with the killers of Muslims," one shouted. There will never be peace until one side or the other is obliterated. Wake up Israel.

What was the twisted motive for their attack I wonder? Did they mistake him for another innocent Israeli? I dont get it, Isnt Egypt more or less their allies? He was working on a peace plan.

What idiots! No wonder no country in the Middle East wants to take them in...but of course they all want them to have their own state. Oy. So 15 minutes after the Palestinians are given a nation some Palestinian nut case blows himself and some Israelis up and Israel declares war on the new nation and things return to their current condition.

It is such a pleasure to read the truth. I don't believe I had ever considered the psychological roots of palestinian hatred which though aimed at the Jews, might just be a trasference from those of their own who abandoned them in their stupidity. They could have been assimilated into Israel, but noooo, they had to choose poorly, and are paying for their stupidity yet today. It will take a miracle for them to change their ways, and I'm praying for one, but not holding my breath in the interim

Egypt's primary target is Israel The Arabs of Palestine are not the brightest bunch. But in reality, this is the primary reaction of the "Religion of Peace", they are constantly attacking each other and their neighbors. Unless something so brilliantly stupid happens that the media cannot ignore it, they do not report it. Gaza constantly sounds of gunfire, not because they are attacking the Jews, but because the different factions are at each others throats. Just like the Palestinian "refugee" camps in Lebanon, under PA control, they are blowing each other up all the time and not a Jew for miles...
