"This one turned out bad. I can't sugar-coat that."

Funny thing, but I was just reading in my morning paper about a San Bernardino (CA) deputy who was shot by a suspect during a traffic stop. Oh, and yeah, there was that regrettable incident in Burbank a few weeks ago where two officers were shot, one killed the other maimed for life, making a vehicle approach.

Doesn't justify this officer's actions (and yes, there will be an investigation), but you have to recognize that the officers were dealing with an inherently dangerous situation. You can't leap to an assumption of malice or stupidity from the information presented in the article.

More anarcho-libertarian fraud from the oh-so-principled.

More "cops are GOD and above reproach" from a notable Clintoonite.

Waco to you, dearie.

Judging from some of the posts on this thread it seems FR is not nearly as prone to eject those who slouch from the left as DU (and other far-left sites) are to any who post and diverge a teensy bit from hard-left dogma.

The AJC does have an economic and political interest in projecting helplessness, hopelessness, and oppression to the community, but we know that liberal news outlets never color the news in any fashion. < /sarc >

Let us think about this. You lie down at police command. Then they shoot you in the head? May it be to you as you wish it on others.

He should've showed his hands. If a cop has a gun on you and you refuse to show your hands, the odds are much higher that you'll be shot. Show your hands and don't hold a cell phone or a beeper or anything. If you're too stupid to do that then you get a Darwin Award.

I watched a felony stop for grand theft auto immediately adjacent to my house years ago.

The car had been pulled over and the deputy in the car used the public address system in his car to order the four occupants to stick their hands out the window into the incredibly bright lights coming from the police car.

This situation remained unchanged for several minutes. Sirens could be heard from a distance because the deputy knew that it was poor procedure for him to proceed without further assistance.

The first assisting car raced up to the scene and skidded sideways slightly as it came to a halt with its lights also shining on the suspects. Several more cars joined the scene before the attempt to extract the suspects began.

Each person in the car, identified over the speaker system by which window contained their hands, was ordered to exit the vehicle, put their hands on their heads, and walk backward toward the first police car.

As each suspect came alongside the first police car, he was cuffed and placed in the police car.

The police were entirely unconcerned by my presence just twenty feet away as I stood inside my back yard and observed them over my fence.

The officer in this article apparently decided that he would do the job that required at least three officers in my town. His own lack of confidence that the situation was in control probably contibuted to his pathetic performance.

Chalk up another body to the War on Some Drugs.

Just as in medieval times, the Rulers consider their animals to be more valuable than the lives of the "peasants"

Creepy.

New to FR?

Why ruin a perfectly good rush to judgement?

Should have shown his hands. Should not have been shot. These are not mutually exclusive.

Where do you read all that into what I wrote? For all we know it was an accident, not a malicious act that some here are cheering on as fact.

You may think the world is better off but even if he was a dealer it isn't a cops' job to decide guilt and execute justice.

Well, there may not be as many internationalists in Georgia as you may think. I suspect that, if this story is close to correct, most Georgians will not think that Georgia is better off for this kind of incident.

Internationalists? I simply won't shed a tear over this accident if he indeed was a drug dealer who wasn't doing as the cop said for his own safety.

Perhaps the officer should have just waited a while to see if that "hidden" hand emerged with a gun to shoot him or not. How long should he wait? How many times should he be required to demand the suspects to show their empty hands before assuming that the hidden hand is up to no good? Do the suspects have the right to defy the officers and hide their hands anyway? Officers handeling the "war on drugs" are subjected to constant danger from crazed and desperate people. I can only imagine the pressure they must be under! Yes, they need to be careful in dealing with these situations, but just how heroic do we demand that these officers be?

I think sometimes that we are too quick to underestimate the danger that they face.

I look forward to the grand jury investigation. From the facts reported, if true, the best the officer could say in his defense is that the gun accidentally discharged. If that's believable, it could reduce the charges against him to negligent homicide or manslaughter.

We simply cannot condone the death of someone who fails to cooperate quite as fast as a cop may wish, and that's even more true when the victim had no weapon, and apparently hadn't even committed a crime.

A whack on the head with a nightstick might have been justified, but a police officer, of all people, is entrusted to use deadly force only when necessary and to keep his gun under control at all times.

And I don't understand the policy of not releasing his name. If you or I had done something like this, nobody would be protecting our identity.

The "power surge" remark is a generalization meant to slam all law enforcement.

The man was shot with no excuse that can be discerned. It is a senseless tragedy for the man shot and for the community.

An investigation will give the law enforcement officer's reasoning, the witnesses version and hopefully justice will be administered.

When a LEO tells you to do something (Not necessarily jump off a bridge)you do it and when things cool down you can seek legal redress if necessary. Why would he refuse to show his hand, and why was he shot when he did not use a weapon to threaten the officer,as less than lethal force is available under most circumstances. It sounds like poor judgment on the part of the dead man and LEO.However the fact that he was unarmed and statements from the officers superior bring up doubts as to the justification of this shooting....We will have to waite until this goes to a grand jury,if it makes it that far.

There must've been a reason.

No need to have trials then ... everyone arrested must be guilty, as with everyone ordered to the ground.

He should've showed his hands. etc.

For sure I would have showed my hands, and I expect that you would have as well.

This does not excuse what happened. At best it is a mitigating circumstance.

If a 'civillian' did the same thing to a robber, it would be a murder charge at least.

Yes, and arresting officers have the right to pry it open whether the suspects are willing or unwilling.
