(Houston) Metro OKs plan to name its HQ for (corrupt outgoing Dem mayor) Brown (how appropriate!)

Metro's board approved a resolution Thursday to name the agency's new downtown headquarters for Mayor Lee Brown, who many credit for spearheading the construction of Houston's first light rail line.

The Metropolitan Transit Authority's headquarters -- under construction at 1900 Main St. -- is adjacent to the Downtown Transit Center stop on the light rail line. The 14-story structure, which should be completed in early 2005, will be christened the "Lee P. Brown Metro Administration Building."

A resolution unanimously passed by the board of directors states that Brown "has been unwavering in his support of public transit" and efforts "to provide clean, comfortable, reliable, effective, and efficient mass-transit service."

It also lauds the mayor for being "a particularly strong and effective advocate for the return of urban rail service to Houston in order to provide this community with an environmentally clean, quiet, and customer-friendly alternative to private automobiles."

"They didn't tell me anything about it. It is a real surprise and honor," Brown said. "I had no expectation that they would be doing this."

Chronicle reporter Kristen Mack contributed to this story.

Only fitting that no one forgets where to attach the blame.

From this day forward, every time the light rail train collides with an automobile or mows down a pedestrian we can recall the memory of Lee P. Brown. Such a fitting legacy for one of the most incompetent and corrupt mayors in Houston's history.

They named a downtown federal building for deceased Congressman Mickey Leland (D). This after Mickey said in an interview with a local paper he was "probably a Marxist".

Maybe they're just trying to get him in a good mood so he'll lower his asking price for all the properties he purchased...which just happen to be located in the way of the next installment of the light rail projects.
