Humm. Up to now, I've belonged to the school that al Shifa was an aspirin factory, and that the soil evidence was faked or inconclusive.

But this is a very clever article. If the attack on Khartoum was just a ploy to take the heat off the Monica affair, can the clintonoids afford to confess that now? It really puts them in a cleft stick.

It does sound less than satisfying to one Bush administration official. "So, when the Clinton administration wants to justify its strike on al Shifa," this official tells me, "it's okay to use an Iraq-al Qaeda connection. But now that the Bush administration and George Tenet talk about links, it's suddenly not believable?"

This reversal also affects our side...are we really willing to say that the missiles were not just about Monica and it was an appropriate measure of pre-emptive self defence. Most republicans took this honorable give him the benefit of the doubt position, but many did not.

The Clinton administration also warned the American public about those ties and defended its response to al Qaeda terror by citing an Iraqi connection.

This is also interesting regardless of how real the ties were because it shows that Iraq alone was then considered a primary terrorist threat and al Qaeda a threat because of possible ties. Somehow, post 9/11, Iraq is only seen as dangerous if it has ties to al Qaeda. Go figure...
