Libya 'to give up WMD'

Libya's leader Colonel Gaddafi has said his country sought to develop weapons of mass destruction capabilities but will dismantle this programme completely, Prime Minister Tony Blair has announced. "This decision is an historic one and a courageous one and I applaud it," Mr Blair said.

Colonel Gaddafi had told him the process of dismantling the programme would be "transparent and verifiable", the prime minister said in a statement from Durham Cathedral.

The range of all Libya's missiles would be restricted to "no more then 300km, he added.

Mr Blair said Britain had been engaged in talks with Libya for nine months.

"Libya came to us in March following successful negotiations on Lockerbie to see if it could resolve its weapons of mass destruction issue in a similarly cooperative manner," he said.

Kaddaffy was acting up quite a bit, so Ronnie sent some stealth bombers over there to say hello.

stealth bombers? ... not in 1986 ... the raid consisted of F-111 Aardvark's with F-18's firing HARM's into Libya radar sites ... the F-111's use their PAVE TACK pods to guide their laser-guided bombs to the various targets ... F-14's provided air cover just in case (a pair of F-14's shot down a couple of Libyan SU-22's around that time IIRC) ... one F-111 was hit by Libyan ground fire and went down with the loss of the 2-man crew ... in addition, one bomb was pickled off near the French embassy for not letting the F-111's fly over from Lakenheath, I believe, in England, forcing them to take extra longs flights and multiple refuelings ... Operatin El Dorado Canyon ... around April 15, 1986 ...

**Am skeptical. As is the case with Iraq, having a WMD inventory isn't predicated on having a "Dr. Evil" type lab. Just bury a few beakers here and there, keep a few well paid scientists on the dole and lay low. Remeber, he IS A punk dictator well versed in decit.**

Normally, I would be in complete agreement, but his actions lately lead me to believe that he may well be serious. He finally settled the Lockerbie bombing and the settlement with France that they are trying to negotiate makes this seem promising.
