Libya 'to give up WMD'
BBC ^ | 19/12/2003 | BBC

Posted on 12/19/2003 2:32:59 PM PST by Da_Shrimp

Libya's leader Colonel Gaddafi has said his country sought to develop weapons of mass destruction capabilities but will dismantle this programme completely, Prime Minister Tony Blair has announced. "This decision is an historic one and a courageous one and I applaud it," Mr Blair said.

Colonel Gaddafi had told him the process of dismantling the programme would be "transparent and verifiable", the prime minister said in a statement from Durham Cathedral.

The range of all Libya's missiles would be restricted to "no more then 300km, he added.

Mr Blair said Britain had been engaged in talks with Libya for nine months.

"Libya came to us in March following successful negotiations on Lockerbie to see if it could resolve its weapons of mass destruction issue in a similarly cooperative manner," he said.

The same deal could have and should have been allowed with Saddam"

You know, when I was watching Blair make the announcement on the BBC I wondered who'd be first to make that specious connexion. I wonder if your Dems beat our Socialists to it?

348 posts. I'm sure someone has already speculated that the announcement by Lybia regarding WMD has a direct link to intelligence found in Iraq (recently). Methinks Qaddafi was assisted with the decision to disclose his weapons programs. Kinda like an "offer he couldn't refuse."

Imho of course.

You posted: "Shame they had to announce this on a Friday evening leading into a holiday week. It needs max exposure becasue it validates Bush's strategery and makes the Rats look like idiots."

Actually, I think that GW likes have things like this announced Friday Night, Saturday or early Sunday like the capture of the $oddomite.

Can you imagine what this does to the preplanned weekend attack on GW coordinated by the NY Slimes and ABCNNBC BS?

They were ready to say that the capture/surrender of The $oddomite didn't do anything to make America and the World safer.

Now, if they run with that stuff, they will look like idiots out of touch with reality again.

Now the screeching lib heads on Sunday TV have to memorize new mantras and new ways to try and minimize this news.

While they are flummoxing around, GW will cap their knees with another announcement next weekend or better yet on New Year's eve.

Just how many talking head shows are on over the weekend now. They will all have to talk about this.

Yeah, they'll talk about it, and all but Fox will dismiss this news as no big deal. Maybe they'll have Howard Dean (or equivalent) on to say America is still not safer.

"Here is what one had to say about the deal we offered Ghaddafi: "The same deal could have and should have been allowed with Saddam"

NEWS FLASH!!! WE DID OFFER THAT, FOR OVER 10 YEARS!"

LOL! No kidding...

They are so stupid... What's funny is that unless there is clear benefit/drawback to GW, they dont' know what position to take.

with CFR and the Supreme Court, they were apparently weren't sure until some brave Dems checked out FR and saw that we were generally upset.

Then they decided that the 60 day gag rule was good.

It's sad, really. I think Democrats are just not informed--most of them don't follow (carefully ) the news.

For example, my sister (and I love her) is an Al Gore-voting full-fledged Democrat.

I called her on Sunday and said, "Guess what? They got Saddam!"

First of all, even though it was, oh early in the afternoon, she had NO IDEA... and second of all... she then asked me, "So... what was it that he did that was so bad?"

I told her... but you know--such ignorance is a slap in the face to the men and women who have lost their lives, and will continue to lose their lives, in the cause of establishing freedom in Iraq.

Remember the old SNL skit--How many ways can you spell Qaddafi, Kadafi, etc.?

Back when he was somebody, a local comedy troupe did a spoof on Paul Simon's song 50 Ways to Leave Your Lover:

There must be 50 ways to kill Qaddafi...just shoot him the back, Jack...hit him on the head, Ned...

They probably thought of it simultaneously! On the bright side, I have noticed that there are more lefties who cringe at this kind of reasoning and are didtancing themselves from such nonsense.

The Blair/Bush one-two punch. Startin' to look unbeatable.
The Dems are going to have to do some fancy footwork to come up with a "nice, BUT...." rejoinder to this, which looks like it could create a bit of a domino effect among leaders of a few other countries in the region. Bush doesn't need to gloat, he's actually ACCOMPLISHING something tangible. I really can't wait for the Dem response, which I think will be very muted, if they even dare to give one. They will probably let it just sit there, and hope the nay-saying starts from "other quarters" than the offical Dem candidates. CNN, for example.
