Architects Release Revised WTC Tower Design
By The Associated Press
December 19, 2003, 9:55 AM EST
A new design for the Freedom Tower at the World Trade Center site gracefully slopes into a spire rising 1,776 feet, echoing the Statue of Liberty and invoking elements of the Brooklyn Bridge, according to renderings released Friday.
The new plan -- which comes after months of contentious negotiations between designers Daniel Libeskind and David Childs -- retains many elements of Libeskind's original plan but appears to smooth out many of its most angular elements.
At a news conference to unveil the design, Childs said the tower must be "simple and pure in its form, a memorable form that will reclaim the resilience and the spirit of our democracy."
Mayor Michael Bloomberg said the tower -- to be the world's tallest -- would "dramatically reclaim a part of the New York City skyline that was lost on 9-11."

It looks uninspired to me. Very plain.

I'm ok with it. It's much better than the squat plain buildings the insurance companies suggest. To me it suggests a big American finger to the terrorists.

Ping.
(from the article) The plan calls for a cable suspension structure that creates an open area above the building's 70 floors of office space, and houses windmills to generate energy. The windmills could provide 20 percent of the building's energy.

A German project - and an insult to the WTC dead

The open framework at the top bugs me. Looks unfinished, like scaffolding. It will also projects an eternal sense of fear -- like we're afraid to actually use the space they stole from us.

neat... you can see through it!

I wonder how they are going to make it out of translucent crystal.

I don't like the top, looks funky. Why wouldn't they just rebuilt Towers, it would be cheaper. But, I am not on architect, but one thing is for sure: NYC skyline has to be reclaim again.

A German project Yeah, those "Germans" really are nasty when they let us military bases that give the United States and Britain easy access to a large part of the Eastern hemisphere.
Imagine if ALL Germans believed that our media represents the views of ALL Americans. It doesn't, and you shouldn't judge the people of an entire country through one dimension.
Besides, Germans are known to be pretty good engineers. why would their involvement in a creative engineering project be an insult?
