Johnson was a National Unionist, who started out as a Democrat, and than ran and served against the Democrats on the GOP national ticket, in 1864, going on to finish out the Republican term of President Lincoln.

The ticket on which Lincoln and (Andrew) Johnson were elected in 1864 was that of the (National) Union Party. It was called that because it included War Democrats, as well as Republicans. And (Andrew) Johnson was put on the ticket precisely as a prominent War Democrat. I don't think he ever called himself a Republican.

Andrew Johnson, disgraced for life? Wasn't he reelected to the U.S. Senate by the Tennessee legislature in 1874? Strange kind of disgrace.
