Is this in fact any different than an IUD? I think many women had them for years before they realized that they are actually an abortion. Am I correct? What a world we live in--or I should say country.

I think many women had them for years before they realized that they are actually an abortion. That depends on whether pregnancy starts at fertilization or implantation. There is a rather high rate of failure (~80%)for fertilized eggs to implant into the wall of the uterus without taking a morning after pill.
