Nobel Prize Winner's Priorities Skewed!
FRENCH STOOGE/PAWN/PUPPET

The annual announcement of the Nobel Peace Prize lately is more often anticipated with a cringe, with the likes of Yasser Arafat having claimed the prize. This year's prize sends another highly mixed message. Shirin Abadi, an Iranian human rights activist, is this year's recipient, and she used the occasion to lash out not at the oppressive mullahs of Iran but against the West in general and, in thinly veiled remarks, the United States in particular. "Regulations restricting human rights and basic freedoms ... have been justified and given legitimacy under the cloak of the war on terrorism," she said. That may well be true in some corners of the world, so it's a fair enough statement coming from a human rights activist. But then she went on to say this: "The concerns of human rights advocates increase when they observe that international human rights laws are breached not only by their recognized opponents," but also by "Western democracies ..." She specifically cited U.S. prisoners of war held at Guantanamo Bay as an example.
Abadi apparently has done much to attempt to improve the lot of Iranians, especially Iranian women. But please, spare us the sanctimonious moral equivalence drawn between the horrors inflicted by despots and an American prison camp where the captives are treated better than they ever were in their home countries.
Lest the Peace Prize diminish to Lilliputian import, the Nobel Committee would do well to raise its sights a bit higher.

"Regulations restricting human rights and basic freedoms ... have been justified and given legitimacy under the cloak of the war on terrorism," she said. It's virtually impossible to win the Nobel "Peace" Prize nowadays without being anti-American --- Arafat, Mandela, Annan, and Jimmy Carter are recent examples.

Amazing. What a waste.

I see it as a warning. Many of the post 9/11 laws are taking our country more in the direction of places like Iran as far as personal freedoms are concerned. We need to stop it.
Someone else on FR mentioned something a while ago that really got under my skin. He asked when was the last time you've heard someone say "Hey, it's a free country." I don't hear it anymore.

most Iranian women are BEAUTIFUL! I can vouch for that. Many Jewish Iranians came to my hometown to live (in So. Cal) right before the Shah's ouster, and attended my high school ('78 - '82). One girl in particular was (and probably still is) beautiful beyond belief -- Miss Universe material.

I've only been watching this situation out of the corner of my eye so I may not be fully informed but ...
it seems to me that this women was highly critical of the mullahs upon announcement of the prize. The mullahs publically warned her to straighten up. After a short time she seemed to dissappear for a while. She then turned up in a hospital under unpublicized circumstances with a broken leg. She then reemerged into the public eye with a notably anti-American slant to every public appearance.
Anybody else have reason to believe she has been "influenced" by a desire for herself or her family to live?

I have to disagree with you. I think that Ebadi is doing certain things because frankly she 'has' to. She's playing smart politics because she has to, and i think overall she's sincere, but we can disagree.

It's all one big show... They are all games - she was put into power by the French and others... anyhow - Iranians aren't listening to her, so she matters little..
