FDA to Debate Sale of Morning-After Pill

WASHINGTON — Medical and women's groups are asking the government to allow a morning-after pill to sell without a prescription, saying easier access could prevent more than a million unplanned pregnancies and hundreds of thousands of abortions every year. If fertilization already has occurred, it prevents the egg from implanting into the uterus, the medical definition of pregnancy. If a woman already had become pregnant, emergency contraception would have no effect. So it hasn't proved nearly as contentious as RU-486, the abortion pill.

Attention Pro-lifers! This is not good! I fear for the young girls that would be able to get this without even seeing a doctor! This is not safe!!

I question the safety of making emergency contraceptives OTC. But as usual we only focus on the girls. Boys have it made.

It is quite safe, and that's why it is already sold without restrictions in several European countries.

I am sure ID will be required in the same manner I have to show ID to buy markers, spray cans, and herbal energy pills.

This isn't an issue for pro-lifers because the pill prevents conception.

Won't be that easy of an argument. Most pro-life people will take the view that once fertilized, the egg is fully a person and entitled to full rights of person-hood as if they were already born.

Certain pro life groups make anything and everything their agenda according to the slippery slope theory. This is the same pill that is administered in ERs after rape to prevent a pregnancy.

You're right, and the postion of the extremists that a rape victim should have to give birth to her rapist's child only guarantees that the vast majority of Americans will not take anything they say seriously

People will have to accept the fact that abortion will never be illegal.

Giving birth, or having an abortion several months later, is probably about 10,000 times more medically unsafe than the morning-after pill (which is simply birth control pills, actually.).

And I'm a bit surprised that you are in favor of more abortions, since you oppose the morning-after pill.

Of course, you think it IS an abortion. Newsflash: You'll never, ever, ever, ever, ever, ever, ever, in a BILLION years, convince the majority of the country that a single-cell fertilized egg prior to implantation is a person.

what will happen, of course, is that the women won't take it correctly, not know they are pregnant, and then have to be aborted rather than have a malformed baby. Of course, the chance of such a kid being malformed is small, but that won't stop the proaborts from doing propaganda...

It also will make risky sex more likely, women figuring they don't need "to take the pill every day" then they won't take this correctly

When I've prescribed it for rape it makes the women sick...nausea, vomiting etc. most didn't take it right.
But I stopped prescribing it years ago when they found it cause early abortion rather than merely increasing transit time of the egg or stopping egg release.

This also will allow lawsuits against Walmart and Catholic hospitals and pharmacists who refuse to give out the pill...

"I fear for the young girls that would be able to get this without even seeing a doctor!"

More likely:
"I fear young girls would be able to get this without I, Nosey Parker, being able to interfere"

Now abortion can be a "choice" for the mother OR the father! Would it even be illegal for an expectant father to murder his unborn child rather than pay his girlfriend child support for 18 years? Even if it is, six months in jail might be a wiser financial decision in the long run. After all, the child has no rights according to our judicial oligarchy.

The effectiveness of this "treatment" doesn't end within 72 hours of pregnancy. Now that anyone can purchase this without record or limit, forced abortions will be easier than ever. This poison will make abortion anyone's "choice", not just the mother's.

I am definately Pro Life, however, since Abortion will never be illegal, I support this pill. I would much rather someone take a pill and prevent a possibily fertilized egg attach itself in the womb, then for some to murder a 3 month old baby.

know what i mean?

We lost. The liberals won. "Gay" marriage, abotion on demand, sodomy as a civil right. BUT, God taken from the pledge, the Ten Commandments removed from the courthouse, prayer out of the schools. Criticize a politician on the radio and go to jail. We lost.

That's a pretty mean thing to say about someone you don't know. I care about women't health. Yes, I am pro-life and I believe that a fertilized egg is a baby...life. Can't convince me otherwise. We disagree on that. But the potential for misuse of this drug is frightening. It's not like taking a vitamin. A miscarriage or early abortion is not an easy thing to go through. It can be very painful. I hate that these girls may be trying to go through it on their own. I'm not being a Nosey Parker...I am truly concerned for their well-being.
