The cardinal, who likely lives in his sheltered Vatican world devoid of crime, hunger, or direct views of pure evil and suppression, comes across as a real pollyanna in his statements. His Mr. Nice Guy comments are received well by the pompous and pampered bunch who are career Vaticanists. I don't hate them for what they say but I can't respect them either. Hopefully they will come to their senses, someday.

I said that the statement was a "moral vanity" and I think you are saying the same thing. I confess feeling pangs for Saddam looking so humiliated the same way I feel pangs for the Unabomber who looks so crazy. But I still want justice served up. I think the Cardinal emphasized his compassion without having a heavier emphasis on his desire for justice. It was a stupid statement, a vanity, and not worthy of him or his church.
