There are probably about 12 AKs in Iraq, and the AP and Reuters boys carry them around as props for the locals to pose with to increase the chance that their photos get published.
(Not really, but their lenses certainly have an affinity for the guns, don't they?)

We left them in possession of their individual weapons. It really chaps my A$$ that they can have full auto AKs with folding stock, flash suppressor, bayonet lug and full capacity magazine. And many Americans can't! Not even a semi-auto version. No americans can have newly manufacutured one, semi or select fire, but Iraqies can? What's wrong with this picture.
