Ditto... my reaction: "Uh oh, predicted by Hackworth... going to be a long time coming, if ever"

You got that right. Before Saddam was captured, Hackjob acted as if he were a Dean or Clark supporter. Me thinks he's a closet demorat.

But we got Saddam primarily because of good grunt work rather than any input from Washington or L. Paul Bremer's team in Baghdad. And that might be because of the infighting and red tape that's currently preventing the Pentagon, the CIA and State from pulling the Iraqi rope together in the same direction.

This paragraph neatly sums-up Hackworth's entire world view: the 'Lowly Grunts' are honorable, and the Brass are idiots who can't do anything right.

You'd think that Lt. Col. Hackworth would have learned during his long & distinguished career that the winning side isn't necessarily perfect -- they just tend to make fewer mistakes.

"You'd think that Lt. Col. Hackworth...."

Ooops there. Hackworth is a retired "full-bird" Colonel. He was a full-bird when he went on TV with Dan Blather in Vietnam to complain about how the war was being fought. Obviously, that instantly sunk his chances of getting his stars. Yeah, he's a shameless self-promoter who sometimes gets it right, but no reason not to give his proper rank its due.

My mistake....Col. Hackworth. I was firing from the hip, and I couldn't remember his final rank. I believe that his last field command was as a battalion commander -- hence Lt. Col. -- but I might be mistaken there, too.
