Seriously, though, doesn't this just illustrate how precarious things can be for us? What if a flu virus mutated so severely that it cause a 25-30% death rate? Could modern medicine be able to prevent it? This story appears to answer no, at least not very quickly.

What if a flu virus mutated so severely Fujian has clearly mutated. Scientists knew, but FDA and industry said wait till next season, even though Panama has been give for 4 years in a row and Fujian "signature" said "don't wait". The virus grew fine in chicken eggs after passage through MDCK cells. The only dissenting vote was cast by the scientist with the most information.
