Actually, I have to retract that, I'm repeating a bogus version of history. The majority of the Cuban population had no idea that Castro was Communist when Baptista was overthrown and he came into power. They would never have supported him if they'd known. Believe it or not, he waged the revolution on a pro-U.S. platform. Cubans were slowly woken up to the fact that Castro (and now Cuba) was communist and pro-Soviet between 1959 and 1961.

Smart move on Castro's part. If the people had seen him for what he was early on, they could have squashed his ragtag bunch of losers like a bug.
