We don't know about his life. Maybe he did try for "medication and treatment."
I can tell you I've been on antidepressants from time to time--they are NOT easy to com off of, btw.
I guess I feel like science and medication fills a gap--and thank goodness for modern medicine.
All I can say is, we didn't walk in his shoes, so let's not criticize, especially here.
People are given a certain path in life, burdens to bear. I believe we must learn from them, and sometimes the learning is not easy.
