Churchill called his depression "the black dog". He also used to say "When you find yourself in hell, keep walking". Anyone suffering from anxiety/depression should read more about him for inspiration.

The Memorial Wall... ah, thankyou so much, all, to the people involved with putting that up.

And thanks for pinging me to that, J.

I know this has been there for some hours now, I'm just a little more scattered each day. Apologies for not thanking you sooner.

I hear ya. I totally agree that it sucks that having emotional issues sucks. Some of us are better equipped to deal with things, some of us not as well-equipped. I guess it's like how some of us are better at sports, or art, or whatever.

But when it ultimately comes down to it, at the moment of truth, you have to pull back and say, whoa, suicide is not the answer.

Apologies for not thanking you sooner.

You take your time ... no call for apologies. You have the sincere sympathy of hundreds, if not thousands. Lots of shoulders (and more) here -- feel free to lean as required.

There are very few times when the death of someone I do not know has brought me to tears. This is one of them.

To those who want to know what depression is like: it is despair. A gray, infinite despair. It is being in a stadium full of thousands of people, yet feeling so alone. It is looking at a sunset, and seeing nothing but gray.

I, too, have known what depression is and what it can do to a life. When my lovely wife kicked me out and eventually divorced me, I lost it. I had never come so close to suicide than I did one day. But there was One who saved me, and my faith in Jesus is never stronger. He brought me back from the brink of death, and has given me the faith to pray for the restoration of my marriage, no matter what. The Lord can do that for anyone lurking here. The gray murky cloud of depression is still there at times, but reading the Bible, especially the Psalms, helps very much. I would recommend Psalms 6, 13, 20, 23, and 91 for starters.

To Mrs. TILH: I know how indescribable pain can feel. Remember the old Footprints story about one set of footprints in the sand. He can carry you. I wish I could say something that would take away the pain, but I trust you do have close friends to lean on. Though I am a FReeper stranger, I am so sorry for your loss.

No problem. I realize that you are on a different time zone. This whole thing has been amazing. So much support and concern. I shouldn't be surprised. Freepers are extraordinary people.

May she find comfort - she and Chris's family will be welcomed with open arms, soft words, and many prayers.

Lord watch over our friends at this time and keep them close.

By now I've probably met close to a hundred freepers (including you), and not only were none of them imaginary, but there there wasn't a loser or weirdo in the whole lot.

I haven't met nearly as many Freepers as you, but the ones I've met have all been intelligent and attractive :-)

Bring your husband to the Christmas party, so we can taunt him properly. :)

I wish I could come to the party, but it's always on the weekend I celebrate Christmas with my family in Pennsylvania.

If you ever do meet my husband, be gentle. He's probably the only guy on the NYC Dept of Sanitation that voted for George Bush.

A man so young. I've only known a few who died so young, and it's always heartbreakig. God knows each of us perfectly, so we can hope he is at peace with Him.

O God of spirits and of all flesh, who have trampled death, broken the power of Satan, and have granted life to Your world; grant rest, 0 Lord, to the soul of Your departed servant Chris in a place of light, joy and peace, where there is no pain, sorrow, or mourning. As a kind and gracious God, forgive every sin committed by him in word, deed or thought, since there is no man who lives and does not sin. You alone are without sin, Your justice is everlasting justice, and Your word is the truth. For You are the resurrection, the life, and the repose of Your departed servant Chris, 0 Christ our God, and we glorify You, together with Your eternal Father +, and Your all-holy gracious, and life-giving Spirit, now and ever and forever. Amen.

May God grant rest to the soul of His servant Chris and may his memory + be eternal. Amen.

So I don't miss it, would someone please let me know if a way is found to send a memorial gift to Chris' family? Thank you Freepers.

Maybe you didnt know that, i hope not.

Nope, did not know that. I won't apologize, only because I never believe apologies really help once the damage has been done, so I will just go and post on the other thread.

I am so saddened by TILH's loss. I encountered him on many threads...he was articulate and so funny. I enjoyed his posts.

I read all 816 posts before I replied myself. So many of us deal with depression, myself included. My deepest sympathies to his wife and family, and our family here (and you are all real friends, not imaginary).

I don't post very often, but try to keep up with articles and replies when I find time.

TILH's posts were always sharp, witty, crisp, informative, and always grabbed my attention while scrolling through a thread.

He touched more lives than he may have realized.

May God give TILH's family the strength they need during these hard times.

Like a lot of suicidals who don't care who they hurt.

I have never been suicidal myself, but when the emotional pain is at most fierce, the only thing a person can register is the agony... My father committed suicide when I was in high school. It took a long term to come to terms with it, but it was all about him and had nothing to do with anyone else.

Don't mean to sound crass, but as someone even younger than tilh who's recovering from a life-threatening and -altering illness, who actually felt like and was dying, I ultimately don't find much sympathy for people who kill themselves.

I hate to post too much about my history, since it can get kinda maudlin, but... I am a bone cancer Victor having a bout with a nasty type back in high school. 18 months of harsh chemo, 8 weeks radiation. Large inoperable tumor (near the base of my spine) due to size and location. The odds were 40% at that time (survival) up from 5% and then 20% for people getting it about 10 and 5 years prior. BTW - over 20 years later, I still suffer from misc. side effects.

I can cry when I stub my toe. I feel empathy and understanding for others when they stub their toes. My prior suffering doesn't make current suffering any less painful at the time, nor does it make someone else's less painful either.

I just feel it's an act of ultimate narcissism and selfishness and blowing out of proportions to absurd levels the problems we all face in life.

I suffer from depression too. Cancer was easier to fight, ya know?? I've had some other big problems in my life as well, many from when I was younger. My depression causes things to get blown out of proportion at times, it's not that I get depressed because I blow things out of proportion.

I feel sympathy for both you for your and the others have shared their instances of depression on this thread. Compassion is not a zero sum game.

I am just a couple of years older than TILH. Coming out with my depression is easier than coming out as a gun owner to my liberal friends. ( I live in a liberal metropolitan area)

By the way, ma'am, it just occurred to me: Even his screen name spoke to depression. "Trapped" in liberal "Hell"? No one is trapped anywhere unless they don't know any other way. He felt trapped, and probably would have anywhere. It is imperative you understand that this is all about him and nothing about you.

I'm angry at your husband. I'm angry any time anyone throws away a healthy body in a world of such disease and discomfort. I'm also angry because there are times when I have looked at the gun and wondered if an easier way existed.

No easier way exists for me. No easier way exists for you, as well. I wish you much solace and, eventually, peace.
