I'm sorry to have to report that one of our own Freepers, TrappedInLiberalHell, has passed away. His profile is HERE

I met Chris this past summer and found him to be a brilliant young man, who unfortunately carried around a lot of painful psychological troubles. He wrote few posts here, but was an active and clever noter, and a very sweet young man.

R.I.P., Chris van Loon

thanks for copying that--I'd read it thanks to seamole but didn't post it.

What you said here is so important:

"Maybe next time someone posts something like this, maybe we can extend a helping hand, or at least a prayer their way. I pray that we can learn from Chris, and grow as a family to help those in our family who needs help."

I couldn't have said it better... so very true.

And btw, to everyone who posted a picture, now I am really crying...

we will miss you, Chris!

God bless...

Thanks for helping me out. My earthlink hosting site is in some kind of transitional glitch and it's making me crazy. I'm on the lookout for another free webhosting site, if you can recommend any.

Again, thanks!

maybe the word "envy " is offensive? perhaps Don't deeply grieve... would be more appropriate. For different folks different words trigger different various responses.

I didn't feel a problem with Braveman's word choice but I guess I too have a mentality that I am ready.. i feel also like you that there is lots I would still like to do here on earth but my deepest conviction tells me it will be much better, more better things await in God's presence.

The unknown is often the scariest part of confronting death. But knowing who is waiting... well, for me that realization makes all the difference in the world

Me:(for some reason I assume everyone but me here is an AARP member)

LOL!

You see, it seems most everyone I know under 40 is infected with Liberalism. I believe conservatives are a bit more mature-- that's just my perception anyway.

On a lighter note... Someone earlier made the typo "I really licked Chris". (liked)

He would have laughed probably. And wouldnt mind if we did.

To whoever made the typo, thanks i needed that.

I am overwhelmed by the responses to this thread, and I hope that next time there is a silly flame war going on, we will remember Chris and this thread. I am sick to death of the sniping and viciousness of some on this forum.

What a wonderful wake this has been today; a wonderful memorial to a remarkable young FRiend, not just to me, but to all of us.

I'm afraid I can't. I just use the one that comes with my ISP.

Oh my God. It's hard to believe. He and I exchanged posts from time to time. Prayers are in order.

This was taken about August/September somewhere in California while Chris and his wife were walking the trail from San Diego.

Looks like he was keeping some kind of online hiking journal here where he was using the screen-name "Phoenix".

(A Google search on "Chris van Loon" turned up this page where he had posted at the bottom of the page.)

How could I know that the witty additions to My list were made by someone in so much pain?

Unfortunately, hispana, the flashes of humor and wit that I also remember from TLH are sometimes a defense mechanism against the pain that they feel. I have had trouble with depression too , and can at times mask My feelings with humor and sarcasm. It's taken Me a long time to be more honest with my feelings. It is difficult to understand how such wit and pain can coexist, but sometimes they do. May God give Him the rest and peace of His love,

God bless,

CC

You're right. He was emailing me the entries and I have the whole file in my hard drive. It was fascinating to hear the stories first hand every day or so.

Just 30.

May the Lord welcome Chris and comfort his family.

I'm going to start some tomatoes in the greenhouse tomorrow.

I share your hope, that the shallow sniping cease. But, the sense of "balance" brought on by the death of a close friend or family member is fleeting -- sadly.

Again, my prayers go out, requesting God to provide His comfort to Chris's family and friends. God's peace surpasses human understanding.

Conservatives -are- more mature, I agree, but I don't think maturity has nearly as much to do with age as you seem to think.

Quite frankly, I think you have things somewhat reversed. 30 years ago, your evaluation was rather correct, the young were the liberals, and guess what? They're 30 years older now and they're mostly STILL liberal. This isn't an age thing, it's a generational thing. And the generation starting to get into the AARP right now is the worst generation in American history - the ones that grew up in the '60's.

Me, I'm 34, and have been staunchly conservative my whole life. Polls are showing that college kids today are -far- more conservative than in previous generations (like 60%), despite the wholesale indoctrination attempts being waged on them. Believe me, it's the kids today that are the hope of conservatism, cause God knows the "grown ups" had their chance and screwed everything -royally-.

Don't get me wrong, I know there are older people who are conservative, but frankly, they're a minority. In New Jersey, when I meet someone older than 50, I give it 70% odds they will go into a screeching anti-Bush, anti-Republican rant on the slightest provocation.

You're exactly right. That's why many, many comedians are deeply depressed people. I have first hand familiarity with that, having been a lounge entertainer myself.

Tokay.. as we are all fessing up to age (cough, cough).. I have a son the same age as TILH... as so I am also a AARP age.

But age is just one component of life. Here at FRee Republic there are all different ages, sizes, degrees of beauty; (we are ALL intelligent - :) , impressions of what is good conservatism, and an array of activities from couch potato society to Sky divers. Some are mostly nice; some are mostly nasty.. most of us are somewhere in between. Most of us share the common bond of fulfilling a need here at FR.. Different needs for different folks.

I am glad I found FR & for the many on line friendships that are developing & also the face to face encounters I have already made in the 6 month with FR. (am I still a newbie?)

and for the record.. even though I am over 50 most of those under 25 probably cannot keep up with me (my body building son cant!)

God Bless you all...I feel Chris is aware of this thread in the dimension he now is in. But that is for another day & for face to face chat...

That is the beauty of

Never mind, I know that some of my comments may be considered inflammatory, and that's not appropriate to this thread. I liked TLH a lot, and I really hope my post doesn't stir an angry reaction, because that wasn't the intent even if it were somewhere appropriate, and it definetly isn't here.

If you or anyone else took offense, my apologies.

Well said EggsAckley.

Someone earlier put into perfect words the pain i felt of losing a loved one as a teen, it was so awesome i emailed them and they replied.

The simple words were truly healing to me , hope that doesnt sound too mushy coming from a Republican!

Alot of good will come out of this thread.
