[history]
The White House yesterday said a new immigration review is under way that could lead to amnesty for millions of illegal aliens living and working in the United States.
Confirmation of the review came during a White House briefing, just two days after Homeland Security Secretary Tom Ridge said during a town hall meeting in Miami that the government had to "afford some kind of legal status" to the 8 million to 12 million illegal aliens in the country.

Thanks for the kind compliment. I only hope we can get some kind of program actually enacted, so we can finally begin to straighten out this situation.
I'd like to add that while the presence of cheap labor benefits us in some ways, it hurts us in other ways, because it reduces the incentive to come up with ingenious ways to increase productivity, thus being a drag on the economy.

That's easy. Go to every shopping center parking lot in the Phoenix metro area and round up the guys looking for day jobs. Collect their families on the way out, and then ship 'em to the US Military base in Honduras. You really think that will work??
You think the ACLU and every left wing nut won't come out of the wood works to defend these people??
I'm all for fixing our illegal problem .. but let's also deal with reality and plan from there

Our federal enforcement agencies are busy rounding up and deporting terrorists to protect this nation.
Different agencies.

The local authorities should be turning these people over to the INS for deportation. This could be easily accomplished by attaching strings to the federal "community policing" money that is given to cities.
Right now, many cities forbid their police from cooperating with the feds on immigration violations. But, threaten to pull their goodies, and they'd do an about-face right quick.

Mr. McClellan also said that although some people had interpreted Mr. Ridge's comments as "some broad amnesty discussion," it was not that at all. Well if that ain't "it", there is a brand new breed of dog that quacks, waddles, floats in ponds, has feathers and flies.
"He's very involved in, obviously, overseeing border security and immigration matters, now under the new Department of Homeland Security," he said. "And I think he's been looking at the issue of the large number of illegal immigrants we do have in the country and looking at those that could be threats and those that are here for other reasons.
He had better be taking a GOOD LONG HARD "look" at the polls being run on BOTH sides of the political fence. When they all run 70% to 90% against giving any kind of concessions at all, no matter where the poll is run, it ain't rocket science figuring out dems and pubbies do not want this.
"And so, he's just talking about the realities that we are facing now," he said.
The number 1 reality that they are facing now is if they let this happen it will turn dems and pubbies against the government as a whole.
That is the stuff of Revolutions.

The Republic is dead. It's worse than that. We're going to have amnesty and the Liberals back in control if this thread is accurate.

While you snipe at those who would prefer to shoot down the trial balloon before it gets carried away by the breeze? Good going, I don't think there is anything wrong in voicing an objection. But you have to admit, there are a few over the edge reactions on this thread.
The illegal problem in this country is a mess and will not be solved with a snap of the finger and we also are not going to be able to just round up millions at once and throw them out
Debate and discussions are a good thing .. but let us also realize what is all involved here

Well if we are going to do it, here is my proposal: We institute a minimum immigrant wage, Say half of minimum wage (i'd prefer none, but that's unrealistic). Impose a immigrant services tax say 20% and people employeing them have to pay 20% into it as well. We use those taxes provide minimum benefits to the immigrants, say public schools would get a cut of the taxes and establish some immigrent health care clinics or offer a portion of the taxes to some existing clinics. This will help to remove the current drain of illegals cause on SS and medicare and keep the business using them paying taxes. They have to work like this for 7 years and then apply for citizenship in the normal manner. (what ever that is, most likely needs to be reformed too)
To get a legal document the illegal must have a resident citizen sponser (who can show two generations of citizenship) register with the state, submit to a self paid health exam and background check and pay for fileing fees. The only illegal thing forgiven would be coming here illegally and working illegally any other criminal activity on record before the program or commited while under this program here will result in deportation and exemption from this program. 1 strike and your out.
At the same time it would be wise to refocus enforcement of most the druglaw warriors toward illegal immigrant enforcement and other criminal activity.
If we don't do it right, I'm afraid we will have to do this again in 10 years.

If they make some announcement that they will legalize those who are already here -- I bet there will be millions rushing acrosss the border in the next few months, to try to be part of this mass legalization, which would be disaster. In essence this is that announcement.

GOP dropping all the bombs this week to guage reaction... well before the election. You are right on. Bush would very much like to have the Hispanic vote, but is cautious on amnesty because of his conservative base of support. If our vote is guaranteed because of an opponent like Dean, then he is safe to make moves that might offend us. How do we counter that?
Perhaps it is possible to use the primary season to send a strong signal that conservative votes cannot be taken for granted. I doubt there will be a serious challenge to Bush, but if enough noise was made for an anti-amnesty candidate, it might get through to him.
Any thoughts?

What I am going to do is wait to see what they are actually going to do and not react to something I think they may have said.Unfortunately Mexicans will. Remember what the Haitians did after one offhand remark by derSchlick Meister.

I predict that if Bush is re-elected, there will be some sort of large amnesty in 2006. I'm not voting for him. I will write in someone else or just stay home. The guy is not a conservative.
I figure even if a Dem does get in there's no way he'll do an amnesty in his first term and hopefully there won't be a second. Buys us 4 more years at least.
