If you want to investigate Spanier, I suggest you start by seeing if he was in charge of the University of Nebraska when Lawrence Phillips played there.

Wow! Thanks.

That wasn't the incident I was thinking of, but it sounds worthy of investigation. If Spanier wants to pick on relatively defensive students, he should be willing to under an investigation of his own character.

I would ask all you who have been reading these threads, if you have any information about Graham Spaniers past that may demonstrate hypocrisy, or actions that may call into question his character or ability to lead a university, please post them on FR.

If you are a Pennsylvania resident, a PSU student from anywhere, or the parent of a PSU student, and you have information that may be relevant in a character investigation of Graham Spanier for purposes of a lawsuit, please post it on Free Republic.

Remember Gray Davis!

I'm a student, and I don't get your point. What did Spanier do wrong in this situation.

I googled osborne phillips spanier nebraska and got plenty of hits.

HERE IS ONE:

Relevant quote (about halfway down on right: Dr. Graham Spanier was appointed Penn State’s 16th president in September, 1995. Spanier returned to State College after serving as chancellor at Nebraska since 1991. He was a member of the Penn State fac- ulty from 1973-82, then served at SUNY-Stony Brook, Oregon State and Nebraska.

So it seems he left a few months before the Phillips thing totally hit the fan.

Sorry, don't know why link attempt didn't work. it will be the first thing that shows up on google if you type Osborne Nebraska Phillips Spanier.

Here's another tidbit about another Phillips (this one played at PSU a few years ago) that make Spanier appear to me to be a political opportunits (commenton on April 10, 3 months after bowl game). It probably is also an indicator that there may be bad blook between JoPa and Spanier.

SPANIER SAYS DECISION TO PLAY PHILLIPS WAS WRONG: Source G. Miller, Center Daily

PENN STATE President Graham Spanier said April 10 that, in his view, football player Anwar Phillips should not have played in a postseason bowl game. Penn State has drawn criticism since the discovery that Phillips was allowed to play in the Jan 1 Capital One Bowl after agreeing to a temporary expulsion from the university for violating the student code of conduct. Security On Campus, Inc. has asked the National Collegiate Athletic Association to investigate whether any of their rules were broken in light of the fact that NCAA rules require that institutions withhold from competition any athlete who is not currently a student in good standing at the school. In the university’s student newspaper opinion column, referring to Joe Paterno, Ray Fittipaldo notes, "The same man who benches players for missing class is refusing to comment on why he allowed a player sanctioned for sexual assault to play in a bowl game. The fact is, even if Paterno was not aware that Phillips had been sanctioned at the time of the bowl game, the athletic department was. Judicial Affairs is obligated to inform it of any athlete who is sanctioned." In March, criminal charges of sexual assault and aggravated sexual assault were lodged against Phillips, who is accused of sexually assaulting a female acquaintance November 12. Those charges are pending. At a March 26 news conference, head football coach Joe Paterno refused to discuss the circumstances that allowed Phillips to play in the Capital One Bowl.

And how about this letter to the editor earlier this year:

Letter to the Editor
Spanier hasn't been clear on Phillips case

I recently read the following opinions from Penn State President Graham Spanier regarding the case of Anwar Phillips.

From the Associated Press on April 3: Spanier said "the university handled it reasonably well, even though there may have been some miscommunication." From the Associated Press on April 10: Spanier said "There is a legitimate question as to whether an athlete should be allowed to compete at all after a suspension has been adjudicated, regardless of when the suspension formally takes effect. My own view is that students should not be allowed to participate in university activities in such circumstances."

Regardless of my opinion on the Phillips situation, I am furious at Spanier's duplicity. While I was initially impressed with Spanier, between this incident and his ineffectual prohibitionism, he has lost the credibility to be the president of our fine university. It is time the Board of Trustees start looking for a new president. If it is necessary to continue the tradition of naming buildings for former mediocre presidents (e.g. the Bryce Jordan Center) I suggest the Spanier Teetotaler Waffle House.

Jeezel Peezel, you all have serious issues there at PSU.

I typed in Spanier and controversy and learned about the Sex Faire back in 2001 and Spanier's apologetic reaction to it (as if he didn't know what was happening on his own campus, or at least what types of organizations the University is either sanctioning or supporting);

Type in Spanier and controversy and you'll see what I mean.

Here's one link (it also refers to a previous event called, I'm not kidding, C*ntfest):

This guy cannot possibly have a deep well of loyalty in Pennsylvania.
